Renewable Energy Case 2 – Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) for fuel ethanol production plant
situation
Client wanted to develop and operate a pioneer cassava-to-fuel ethanol production facility as part of a
national initiative to curb GHG emissions and diversify sources of income.
The primary product of the plant was automotive fuel grade bioethanol while co-products included power
(from bagasse), starch, animal feed and carbon dioxide
Consequently, Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) services for the plant was required.
our approach
FEED activities for the plant were structured around 4 main axes of work:
Site assessment and simulation of plant processes using proprietary software to develop process flow
diagrams (PFDs)
Design of chemical, mechanical civil and electrical processes e.g., Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams,
Facility plot plans
Preparation of detailed project cost estimates for EPC phase
Risk assessment and value assurance workshops e.g. HAZID/HAZOP workshops, Value Assurance Reviews (VARs)
Outcome
FEED report was used as basis for detailed engineering design and EPC phase
Successful commissioning of cassava-to-fuel ethanol production facility (ongoing)
